8,000 yards. This is the maximum length that Augusta National will ever reach for the Masters, and not a yard more.

When Fred Ridley had his annual press conference on the eve of the 88th Masters last week, he spoke about the 8,000 yard threshold as a line that Augusta National would not cross and reiterated his support for the golf ball rollback that will take effect in 2028.

The bottom line is that there is only a finite amount of space left that Augusta can utilize, so the golf course can’t keep growing indefinitely to match the distance golfers are hitting the ball these days.

“We have some more room, but we don't have a lot. So I'm holding to that 8,000-yard red line, and I just hope we never get there.”- Fred Ridley, Augusta National Chairman

The debate has raged for a number of years about the impact of how far professional golfers are hitting the golf ball and how it is making some of the old classic courses defenceless.
